The Case of Eric McDavid
Monday June 22 at 7:00pm
Spartacus Books, 684 E. Hastings St.

Join us as we learn about Eric’s case, entrapment, the use of informants, and government repression in general. Unfortunately, these tools of the state are becoming more and more prevalent, and it’s imperative that people understand how they work.

This event is free of charge. All are welcome to attend. More info at supporteric.org.

Come check our "loonie books & children kids books" cart!

Store Front

Our space: 684 East Hastings Street - Finally with store front!

Points of Unity

We acknowledge that we are on unceded Coast Salish territory.

We work toward an anti-colonial and anti-capitalist vision based on tolerance, mutual aid, diversity and inclusiveness within an anti-oppression framework, understanding that all oppressions are fundamentally linked.

We value the free exchange of diverse ideas and information through printed materials and a community space.

We acknowledge that how we do things is as important as what we do, and that creating our space is a continuing process of building relationships that reflect our vision and values.

Vision

We envision ourselves as a collective of volunteers who feel good about what we're doing. We are:

* Creating a sustainable and replicable model of our values in action

* Inspiring and educating ourselves to always learn and adapt

* Holding the space as a safe zone for creative and autonomous activity and collaboration

Our community includes readers, speakers, writers, artists, educators and others coming together as a community of learners to encourage dialogue between divergent views, allowing different perspectives to support and learn from each other through peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

We interact with the community we serve by creating access to revolutionary ideas and tools. We are a source of information not available in other places, supporting local voices to be heard and bringing the voices of other localities to inform our own learning. We foster an environment of creativity, conviviality and fun.

Mission Statement

We provide information and tools for social change and a forum for exchanges between a diversity of ideas and perspectives. We are a volunteer run workers' collective that works in a non-hierarchical way that ensures participation is consensual. We provide our service to a community we love in a respectful, mindful way that values mutual aid and collective responsibility, and act in solidarity with individuals and groups involved in struggles for change that further our vision and support our values.

Some history: Since 1973, Spartacus Books is a non-profit, volunteer & collectively run bookstore & resource center located right on the edge of Vancouver's Eastside (now we're in Strathcona!). The store has been successfully run for 35 years by a collective of volunteers, serving as a hub for radical education and action in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland:

· Offering a wealth of progressive and radical material unavailable through corporate outlets

· Bringing people together across political stripes in a community space on the edge of the Downtown Eastside

· Hosting a wide range of events for groups, individuals and artists active in social change – readings, movies, shows, workshops and much more.

Please come use our safe and inclusive space to:

  • read in peace on the couches
  • use the free computers and internet connection
  • chat and network with diverse and interesting folks
  • learn about and advertise your upcoming events
  • buy books, zines and parapharnelia relating to struggles against classism, racism, sexism, war, corporate greed, environmental destruction, and other institutional atrocities
  • attend movie nights, poetry readings, and many other unusual and often artsy community happenings
  • host an event of your own!

Monthly sustainers:

Throughout its history, the efforts of friends and supporters have been key to the success of Spartacus.

To help us continue Vancouver’s non-profit, collectively-run bookstore and resource centre, the Spartacus collective is asking our friends and allies to consider becoming monthly sustainers. Monthly giving provides Spartacus with much-needed, reliable and predictable revenue, revenue that is critical to maintaining – and expanding – the range of titles we offer and the resources we can provide to groups in the community.

At the same time, by making regular contributions, you can minimize the pain to your pocketbook. For a few dollars each month – the price of a couple of cups of coffee – you can provide valuable support to Spartacus’ efforts.

As well, every monthly donor receives a Spartacus supporter membership, entitling you to ten percent off everything in the store for the duration of your monthly sustainership.

Becoming a monthly sustainer is easy. Complete the Spartacus supporter form, attach a void cheque (on the account from which you would like monthly transfers to be made) and mail them to Spartacus Books, 684 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC, V6A 1H6. (Or drop by in person.)

Transfers will be completed by the CCEC credit union, located on Commercial Drive. The confidentiality of your personal information is assured, and you can stop your donation anytime by calling or writing Spartacus. We hope you will consider becoming a monthly sustainer. If you cannot at this time, please consider making a one-time donation to help us continue our important work.

Thank you from Spartacus!
